Tigers Extend Streak to Four, 5-2 Over VWC

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-The Hampden-Sydney won its fourth straight game with a 5-2 decision over Virginia Wesleyan while gaining momentum at the right time with just two regular season games remaining before the ODAC Tournament. With the win, the Tigers improve to 19-15-1 overall and 11-7 in the ODAC while the Marlins drop to 11-22 overall and 8-10 in ODAC play.

The game stayed tied through four innings as each team scored one run in the first and were held off the scoreboard for the next three frames. The Tigers, however, took a lead they would not give up in the fifth as Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) batted in Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) and Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) on a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers used another sacrifice fly, this one from Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) in the sixth, to score John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and up the lead to 4-1.

Tucker then batted in his fourth run of the day in the seventh as Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) scored the Tigers' fifth run.

Virginia Wesleyan managed one more run in the ninth.

Offensively, each team recorded ten hits and the Tigers were led by Lloyd's 3-for-4 performance with one run scored. Tucker went 1-for-3 but batted in all but one of the team's runs. Gray and Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) each recorded two hits.

Junior Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) took the win after giving up just one run on six hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked one. Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) and Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) each pitched an inning while Rabiej picked up his eighth save of the year.

The Tigers will return home and close out the regular season with a double header against Emory & Henry on Saturday, April 20. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
