Box Score SALEM, VA-Roanoke College used a five run first inning to run out to a 7-6 victory over Hampden-Sydney. The rain started to come down late in the first game, however, pushing the second game of the scheduled double header to tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 17-16 overall and 7-8 in ODAC play, while Roanoke improves to 12-19 and 3-12 in the conference.
After Roanoke's five run explosion in the first, Hampden-Sydney countered with one run. Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) led off the inning with a double and was later scored on a Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) RBI.
The Tigers pounced again in the top of fourth to again cut into the lead. After Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) led off with a single, Hebert advanced the runner to third with his second double of the day. Flinchum later collected his second RBI with a single, to make it a 5-2 game.
Roanoke used the sixth and seventh innings to push its lead to 7-2. Hampden-Sydney responded in the eighth with two runs. Hebert knocked his third double of the day, scoring Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington). Hebert then crossed the plate when Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) hit an RBI single.
Down 7-4, Hampden-Sydney cut into the lead even further in the ninth. Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) batted in the first runner as Drew Walker (Midlothian, VA/Blessed-Huguenot) scored on the single. Martin later scored the Tigers' sixth run as Kuhns hit an RBI single. It was as close as the Tigers would come, however, as Roanoke took the 7-6 win.
Hebert led the way with a 3-for-3 performance with three doubles, three runs and one RBI.
Hampden-Sydney will play the second game of the double header tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
