Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA-Lynchburg College scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead that it would not give up as the Hornets took a 4-3 home victory this afternoon. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 17-15 overall and 7-7 in ODAC play while Lynchburg improves to 19-12 on the year and 11-3 in the conference.
While Kyle Pullen (Severn, MD/Calvary Baptist)pitched four scoreless innings, Hampden-Sydney built a 2-0 lead. The Tigers first pounced in the top of the second. Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) and Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) each singled, and then Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester)recorded the RBI when his single scored Harrelson.
Martin hit his second RBI single in the fourth, scoring Harrelson again after Harrelson reached on a triple.
The Hornets, however, tallied five hits in the bottom of the fifth while scoring three runs to take the 3-2 lead.
Hampden-Sydney loaded the bases in the next frame but was unable to cross the plate.
Lynchburg added one more run in the bottom of the eighth to double its lead at 4-2.
In the top of the ninth, Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) led off the inning with a home run to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Tigers could not score any more.
Harrelson was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs, two walks, a double, and a triple. Martin was also solid with a 2-for-3 outing while batting in two runs.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action this Saturday, April 9, as it travels to face Roanoke College for an ODAC double header. The first game is set to start at 12:00 pm.
