ASHLAND, VA - The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team posted one of its most dominating victories of the season as the Tigers swept all nine matches to win 9-0 on Monday afternoon. In total, the Tigers recording didn't surrender a single game in five of the matches.
Rich Pugh (August, GA/Lakeside) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) won 8-0 at #1 doubles as their all-court game overpowered the Yellow Jackets. Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) were victorious by a score of 8-1 at the #2 spot as they dominated at the net with volleys and overheads. Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) took an 8-1 decision at #3 by utilizing good teamwork and well played service games.
In singles play, Frank Donnelly proved to be no match for Pugh as his experience and power won the #1 duel 6-0, 6-0. Harrell's strong serves and returns earned him a 6-2, 6-1 win at the #2 spot. Calhoun won 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles as his consistent ground strokes proved to be too much. Covington took the #4 match 6-2, 6-1 as he made good volleys at the net. Pack's strong serves were too much to handle for Brad Neubeck as Pack won 6-0, 6-0 at #5. Sammler was able to keep his opponent on his feet and move him around the court to score a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 singles.
The Tigers host Lynchburg College on Tuesday, April 5, for Senior Day at 4 p.m.
