Tennis Falls 5-0 to Washington & Lee in ODAC Championship Match

LEXINGTON, VA - The Hampden-Sydney tennis team lost to Washington & Lee 5-0 in the ODAC Championship match Saturday afternoon.

Washington & Lee put the Tigers in a deep 3-0 hole after doubles matches. Rich Pugh (August, GA/Lakeside) andTal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) fell 8-4 at the #1 flight while Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin)and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) took an 8-4 loss at the #2 spot. Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) fell 8-2 at #3.

Sammler and Harrell recorded the clinching defeats at singles. Sammler recorded a 6-2, 6-2 loss at the #6 flight while Harrell went down 6-1, 6-2 at #2. The rest of the matches were unfinished, but W&L was two games away from winning at #5. Convington won the first set 6-3 at the #4 spot, but was down 5-2 in the second set. Calhoun won his first set at #3 6-2 and was up 3-4 in the second set. Pugh fell 6-1 in the first set at #1 but was up 1-3 in the second.

Hampden-Sydney sports an 11-4 overall record and a #14 regional ranking as the Tigers will await to see if they earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.
