HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team advanced to the semi-finals of the ODAC Tournament with a 5-1 win over the Quakers of Guilford College on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers will play the winner of #3 Bridgewater vs. #6 Virginia Wesleyan on Friday at 4:30 in Lexington, VA, on the campus of Washington & Lee University.
The #1 team of Tyler Mercier and Clayton Hamilton got the best of Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) andTal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) for the second time in a week, but this time it was forced to a tiebreak with Guilford winning the tiebreak 7-4 to take the match 9-8. Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) rolled to an 8-2 win at #2 doubles as did Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) at the #3 flight.
Singles play did not finish to completion as the ODAC Tournament matches are played to decision. Calhoun took down Trevor Cox 6-1, 6-1 at the #3 spot while Covington took a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #4. Pack also won at the #5 flight with a 6-3, 6-1 decision. In the #1, #2, and #6 matches, the Tigers had all won their first set and were leading in the second until the matches ended with Calhoun's win to give the Tigers the five needed wins. Of note is that Pugh was playing ODAC Player of the Year contender Mercier and had defeated him 6-4 in the first set with a 2-0 lead in the second set.
