Box Score SALEM, VA-Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) and Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington )entered tonight's game with 160 career hits a piece - just one shy of Hampden-Sydney's record held by Todd Harrell '08. Each player recorded one hit to tie that record, and then each player got his second hit of the night to break the record while helping the Tigers to the 7-2 victory. The seniors now share the record with 162 career hits.
Hampden-Sydney was first to get on the board as Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) led off the second inning with back-to-back singles. After Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) hit a two-RBI double. Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) later tripled to bat in Tucker.
Roanoke was able to round the bases in the bottom half of the second, but were held to one run to put the Tiger lead at 3-1.
The Tigers built upon their lead in the third with Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run)scoring on a Flinchum RBI double. Flinchum later put the Tigers up 5-1 as he scored on a Tucker RBI double. Roanoke responded in the bottom of the frame with one run of its own.
As Kyle Pullen (Severn, MD/Calvary Baptist)allowed no runs over the final six innings for his complete game, Hampden-Sydney was able to add insurance to the lead with consecutive runs in the eighth and ninth.
In the eighth, Lewis was able to make his way to third after a single, and was batted in by Williams. Herrmann then batted in the seventh and final run as his single scored Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage).
Pullen went the distance while allowing just two runs - one earned - on six hits and striking out eight. At the plate, Harrelson, Herrmann, Flinchum, Tucker and Williams all recorded two hits.
With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 18-18 and 8-8 in the ODAC while the Maroons fall to 12-21 and 3-13 in ODAC play.
Hampden-Sydney will wrap up the regular season with a double header against Randolph-Macon at Yank Bernier Field on Saturday, April 16. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
