HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney tennis team defeated Guilford College 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition. The Tigers have earned the #2 seed to the ODAC Tournament. The quarterfinals begin this Saturday as H-SC hosts #7 Guilford. The winner will advance to play the winner of #3 Bridgewater vs. #6 Virginia Wesleyan at Washington & Lee University.
Tyler Mercier and Clayton Hamilton took care of Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, FA/Flint Hill) at #1 doubles by a score of 8-4. Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) andKevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) won 8-3 at #2 doubles while Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) breezed to an 8-1 win against at #3 doubles.
Mercier's strength and powerful forehand earned him a dominating 6-0 win over Harrell in the first set of #1 doubles. However, Harrell bounced back strong in the second set, forcing a tie breaker that he would ultimately drop 8-6. Calhoun rolled to a 6-1 first set win at #2 singles, but was forced to a tie breaker in the second set, taking the tie break 7-2. Covington earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at the #3 spot while Pack took #4 6-0, 6-4. Sammler produced a 6-2, 6-1 win at #5 singles while Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring)earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win at the sixth spot.
The Tigers will start their quest for a potential fourth ODAC Championship on Saturday against Guilford College with game time to be determined.
