Greensboro's Big Ninth Too Much for Tigers

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Greensboro College used six runs in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a late 9-4 lead to defeat the Tigers 10-9. Greensboro improves to 19-17 on the season while Hampden-Sydney falls to 17-17 overall. The game was back and forth the whole way with both teams having big innings late, but it was Greensboro who knocked in the final run of the day.

The Tigers started off the action in the first, starting with Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) reaching first on a walk. Senior Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) then stepped up to the plate for an RBI double.   

Greensboro tied the game with a run in the top of the second, but Hampden-Sydney was quick to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) was walked and then stole second in get in scoring position. Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) batted in Wind with a double, and then was scored on a Martin RBI double.

The Tigers' 3-1 lead became a 4-3 deficit as the Pride scored in the top of the fifth and seventh, but Zeb Cope (Advance, NC/Davie County) scored Martin on a sacrifice fly to tie the game 4-4.

Hampden-Sydney then came alive in the eighth to again reclaim the lead. Williams and Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) each recorded two-RBI doubles. Williams scored Allan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) and Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River), and Kuhns knocked in Williams and Martin. Hebert scored the fifth run of the inning on a Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) RBI.    

Though down 9-4, the Pride rallied for six runs in the final inning to take a 10-9 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers were then retired in order.

Martin was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, and Kuhns was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Williams was also solid, going 2-for-6 with three RBI, two runs and two doubles.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action this Wednesday, April 13 as it hosts Southern Virginia. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
