SWEET BRIAR, VA - The Hampden-Sydney tennis team traveled to Sweet Briar College for a neutral site, Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest against Emory & Henry College and emerged victorious 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers earned wins at #2 and #3 doubles. Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) used aggressive and consistent net play to dispatch of Adam Henderson and Mike Young 8-5. Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) cruised to an 8-0 win over Zach Eccher and Preston Cardwill as Pack and Sammler displayed aggressive and smooth team work. The 31 doubles duo of Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) took an 8-4 loss from Chip Wintringham and Matt Nelson as the E&H team was very sound fundamentally and communicated and worked well together.
The Tigers swept the #4-6 singles matches, allowing E&H to earn just one game, while #1-3 singles did not finish as the match was played to decision. Covington and Sammler won 6-0, 6-0 at #4 and #6 respectively as Covington wore down his opponent with his all-court game and Sammler uses strong, baseline ground strokes to open up the court. Pack was the victor at 6-1, 6-0 at the #5 spot and he utilized consistent serves to help keep his opponent moving all over the court.
Hampden-Sydney will host Guilford College on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
