Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, VA-The Bridgewater Eagles were too much for Hampden-Sydney as they took a series sweep 3-0 and 10-2 to improve to 8-5 on their season while starting out 2-0 in ODAC play. The Tigers, however, drop to 10-7 on the year and 2-2 in the ODAC.
In the first game, sophomore pitcher Dan Nicoll (Centreville, VA/Bishop Ireton) was solid, pitching a complete game while allowing just three runs - two of them earned - on nine hits. He also struck out five compared to just two walks.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Joseph Lucas shut down the offense while going a full nine with the shutout. Lucas surrendered just three hits, and struck out eight batters to one walk.
Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington), Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) and Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) each recorded hits.
In the second game, Bridgewater exploded to a 4-0 lead after one inning. Hampden-Sydney did chalk a tally on the scoreboard in the third as Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) knocked in Williams on a two-out RBI double.
Bridgewater built on its lead, though, in the fourth and fifth to take a 8-1 lead. Williams crossed the plate again in the top of the eighth to cut into the lead. He reached on a double and was hit home again by Martin on an RBI single.
Bridegwater was again too much, tacking on two more in the bottom frame to take the 10-2 win.
In the game, Williams and Martin each recorded two hits while Williams scored two and Martin batted two in. Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) was also 2-for-4.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action tomorrow, Sunday March 6, as it hosts the Eagles of Mary Washington. The game is set for 1:00 pm.
