Tigers Fall on Road, 6-3 to Averett

Box Score

DANVILLE, VA-The Averett Cougars held Hampden-Sydney to three runs on just six hits while recording the 6-3 win over the Tigers this afternoon in Danville. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 10-5 on the season, while Averett improves to 8-8.

Averett took the early lead in the bottom of the first without recording a hit. Adam Higgins drew a walk to start the frame, and quickly stole second and third. He then scored on a sacrifice fly to take the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) reached first on a walk, and was then advanced to third on an Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) single. Just one batter later, a Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) RBI tied the game at 1-1 as Hebert crossed the plate.

The Tigers took their first lead in the third as Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) knocked in Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) after the speedster led off the inning with a triple.

The Cougars were quick to tie the game at 2-2, however, when Higgins scored his second run of the day in bottom of the frame. Averett then expanded on its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a three run inning that made it a 5-2 game.

In the top of the sixth, Hampden-Sydney closed the gap with one more tally on the scoreboard. Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) batted in the run scoring Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester), who previously reached when he was hit by a pitch.

It was as close as Hampden-Sydney would get, however, as Averett tacked on one more run in the eighth, while finishing the job in the top of the ninth.

Harrelson led the team with two hits and an RBI, while Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Mechanicsville) and Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) each went 1-for-3.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action this Saturday, March 5, as they travel to face ODAC-foe Bridgewater College for a double header. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm.
