Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-After trailing 8-2, Hampden-Sydney scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it an 8-7 game, but it was not enough as Lynchburg tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth and held on to take the 10-7 win at Yank Bernier Field. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 15-14 overall and 5-6 in the ODAC. Lynchburg, however, improves to 15-12 and 8-3 in the ODAC.
The Hornets were first to sting scoring three runs in the top of the second. Hampden-Sydney fought back in the bottom of the frame with two of its own. Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) and Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and then a Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) triple scored the two of them.
After three scoreless innings, Lynchburg expanded on its lead with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to go up 8-2.
Hampden-Sydney made it exciting in the bottom of the eighth with a big offensive explosion. Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) started off the action with a single. Hebert followed with a double, and Harrelson collected an RBI single. Flinchum then scored Hebert to make it an 8-4 game. Harrelson later scored on a Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) RBI double. Martin was later scored on a Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington). Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) also scored in the inning on a Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) RBI. With the five runs in the eighth, the Tigers pulled within one at 8-7.
Lynchburg tallied two more runs in the ninth, though and shut down the Tigers for the last three outs to take the win.
Hebert and Harrelson each had three hits and two runs while Harrelson added one RBI. Flinchum knocked in a game-high three RBI while going 2-for-4.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action as it hosts Eastern Mennonite for a double header on Saturday, April 2. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
