LEXINGTON, VA-After Hampden-Sydney took an 12-8 victory in the 11th inning, Washington & Lee posted a three run, two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth to steal a 3-2 win to split the Saturday afternoon action. Hampden-Sydney now moves to 15-13 overall and 5-5 in the ODAC, while the Generals are now 10-10 and 7-3 in conference play. Senior righty Michael Blanchard (Roanoke, VA/Ronaoke Catholic) was solid through eight and 1/3 innings in the second game, allowing no runs on just five hits.

In the first game, Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) gave Hampden-Sydney the 1-0 lead as he scored in the first inning on a Nick Caporale (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) RBI single.

The initial lead was short lived, however, as the Generals used runs in the bottom of the first and second to take a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers had a burst of offense in the third that reclaimed the lead. Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) led off the inning with a single and was later scored by a Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) RBI. After Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) and Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) loaded the bases with back-to-back singles, Williams cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to take a 5-2 lead.

The back-and-forth battle continued, and Washington & Lee led 8-5 after six innings.

Hampden-Sydney used the seventh and eighth to tie the game at 8-8. In the seventh, Hebert again crossed the plate as a Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) sacrifice fly brought him home. Then in the eighth, after Williams and Wind reached first and second, the duo stole second and third to be in scoring position. Pinch hitter Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) came through scoring both of them and tying the game.

Neither team reached the plate though until the Tigers broke the tie in the 11th. Allan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) and Hebert led off with a single and double, respectively to start out with runners in scoring position. Zach Harrelson's (Danville, VA/George Washington) sacrifice fly scored Brownell for the Tiger lead. Flinchum then followed that up with an RBI single to score Hebert. A Wind walk later scored Flicnhum, and Williams knocked in the final run of the game when he scored Lewis.

In the second game, Hampden-Sydney took the 1-0 in the first inning. Williams led off the game with a walk and a stolen base, and then he was batted in as Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) reached first on an error. Both pitchers were nearly untouchable, as the Generals' Gregg Laswell did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.

In the sixth, Williams again led off and this time reached on a double. Kuhns then tallied his second RBI of the game with a single to take the 2-0 lead.

Neither team could score, however, until the Generals rallied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to drive in three runs and take the 3-2 win.

Kyle Grantier (Danville, VA/George Washington)picked up the win in the first game after picthing five full innings while allowing one run.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Wednesday, March 30 as it hosts Lynchburg College. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
