VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team traveled to Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday and breezed to an 8-1 victory over the Marlins in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play as the weather proved to be warm but very windy.
The #1 tag team of Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) didn't surrender a game as their consistent and aggressive play defeated Zak Bartley and Steven Bond 8-0. Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) showed off good teamwork as they paired at #2 doubles to earn an 8-2 victory over Sky Masand and Ryan Sadinski. VWC got their lone win at #3 doubles when Jamie Griffin and Donnie Greathouse upended Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) 6-8.
Pugh got things off on the right foot in singles as he dominated Bartley at the #1 spot in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Pugh displayed big serve returns and smart decisions with the wind. Two consistent players squared off at #2 singles, but Harrell won with ease, dispatching of Masand 6-3, 6-1. Calhoun took the victory at #3, earning a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bond as Calhoun played steady against a hard hitter.
Covington got off to a slow start at #4, falling 4-6 in the first set, but increased his aggressive to rebound in impressive fashion, winning sets two and three by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Pack got off to a similar slow start at #5 singles, but he won the first set 7-5, but he turned up his level of aggressiveness and took over the second set by winning 6-0. Sammler secured the singles sweep at #6, coming out victorious over Greathouse 6-3, 6-4. Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) participated in an exhibition match against Todd Lauver and earned an 8-2 win.
The Tigers host Roanoke College on Tuesday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m.
