Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-After beating Emory & Henry 9-2 in the first game of the day, Hampden-Sydney completed the sweep of its ODAC foe in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind 4-3 win in 11 innings. With the sweep, Hampden-Sydney improves to 13-11 on the season and 4-4 in ODAC play while the Wasps fall to 1-14 and 1-5 in the ODAC.

The Tigers got off to a quick start taking the first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the first. Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) reached on an error and was able to advance to second, and then third on a passed ball. Nick Caporale (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) stepped up to the plate and knocked in Martin with an RBI double.

A Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage)advanced Caporale to third. After Hebert stole second, Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) was walked to load the bases. Allan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) reached first, but on a fielder's choice as Caporale was out at home. Before the inning ended though, Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) knocked in two runs with a two RBI single.

Neither team could score until the Wasps tallied one run in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-1 ball game. It was the only run starting pitcher Dan Nicoll (Centreville, VA/Bishop Ireton) would allow, however, in his six and a third innings of work.

In the top of the seventh, Emory & Henry scored one more to cut the Tiger lead to 3-2. The Tigers exploded in the bottom of the frame though to extend the lead. Martin, Caporale and Hebert all reached base safely to load the bases for a Harrelson two RBI single. Brownell then advanced Harrelson to second while scoring Hebert. Lewis came up with another hit as his double put him and Harrelson in scoring position. Zeb Cope (Advance, NC/Davie County)scored Harrelson with a single, and then Lewis scored on a wild pitch to put his team up 8-2. Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) batted in the final run of the inning to go up 9-2.

Kyle Grantier (Danville, VA/George Washington) was able to close out the game without surrendering a run.

In the second game, Emory & Henry was the first to score with one run in both the first and second innings.

Hampden-Sydney put one on the board in the third as Hebert scored Martin to cut the deficit 2-1. Emory & Henry fired right back though, putting the lead to 3-1.

After four scoreless innings, Hampden-Sydney came through in the bottom of the eighth. Hebert was the first to reach base, and he was batted in by Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) to put the Tigers within one. Drew Walker (Midlothian, VA/Blessed Sacrament) pinch ran for Herrmann and scored the game tying run on a Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) RBI single.

Neither team would score until the 11th inning. Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a Dalton Renick (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) single. After Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) was intentionally walked, Wind came up with the game-winning walk off single.

Caporale picked up the win after pitching the final two innings.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Tuesday, March 22 as it hosts the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan. The game is set for 3:30 pm.
