HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team rolled past Ferrum College 9-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
The #1 doubles match featured former Mills Godwin high school teammates in Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) battling Christopher Miller and Joseph Jensen proved to be the lone competitive match, but H-SC took the match 8-5. Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) squared off against Darren Agee and Nick Backer and won the affair 8-0. Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) defeated John Hartin and Michael Marsh 8-1 at #3 doubles.
Pugh made his season debut in singles against Miller and won 6-0, 6-1 at the #1 spot. At #2 singles, Harrell dispatched of Jensen 6-2, 6-1. Calhoun won both sets by a score of 6-0 at #3 singles vs. Darren Agee. Covington took down Hartin in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to win at #4 singles. Pack vs. Baker #5 singles proved to be a showdown of former Randolph-Henry High School Statesmen, located nearby in Charlotte County, VA, and Pack got the best of his former teammate 6-0, 6-0. Sammler won 6-1, 6-1 at #6 singles against Cain Walter. Frank Bowers (New Bern, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy)participated in singles play against Andrew Maxwell, winning 8-0 while the doubles teams were participating.
The Tigers travel to Lexington, VA, this Friday to face perennial ODAC, Regional, and National power Washington & Lee University at 4 p.m. The two teams have met in the ODAC Title match the past two seasons with H-SC winning the crown in 2009 while advancing to the second round of Nationals.
