Tigers Fall to No. 9 CNU

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney Tigers had a tough outing against the ninth ranked Captains of Christopher Newport. The Captains connected for 18 hits to take the 13-3 win at Yank Bernier Field. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 11-11 overall, while Christopher Newport improves to 21-1 on the year.

The Captains struck first with a two-out RBI single to take the 1-0 lead. Hampden-Sydney came back in the bottom of the frame with two runs of its own. Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) and Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) led off the side with two singles. The duo then advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Nick Caporale (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) was able to pick up the RBI as he scored Williams and advanced Martin to third. Martin then took the lead when he scored on a wild pitch.

Christopher Newport fired right back with two runs in the top of the second going up 3-2. The Captains steadily scored, amassing a 9-2 after six innings with pitcher Bryan Bierlein holding Hampden-Sydney to just four hits.

After the Captains tacked on two more in the seventh, Hampden-Sydney crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) led off with a single, and then advanced to third as Colby Carter (Manakin-Sabot, VA/Goochland) reached on an error. Williams later batted Lewis in when he reached on a fielder's choice.

11-3 would be as close as the Tigers would come to closing the gap as Christopher Newport added two more runs in the eighth.

Bierlein picked up the win for the Captains while Kyle McKay (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) took the loss after three innings of work.

Williams led the way with two hits, one RBI and one run.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action this Saturday, March 19 as they host the Wasps of Emory & Henry for an ODAC double header. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm.
