Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, NC-Despite scoring 11 runs in the first game of the day, Hampden-Sydney allowed 15 to fall to Guilford College. In the second game, Guilford's bats stayed hot recording the 18-3 win to take the sweep. With the losses, Hampden-Sydney falls to 11-10 on the year and 2-4 in the ODAC while the Quakers improve to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in ODAC play.
The Tigers started the game on the right track, bursting out to a 5-0 lead. Three of the first four batters reached base to load the bags. Senior Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) was then hit by a pitch to score the first run. With two outs, Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) hit a single to score Nick Caporale (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin). Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) was able to clear the bases with a three-RBI triple to put the Tigers up 5-0.
Guilford responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. The Quakers tied the game with one run in the second and took their first lead in the bottom of the third with two more runs.
Hampden-Sydney was able to reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth with some offense. Caporale, Harrelson and Allan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) all scored via RBI from Harrelson, Lewis and Flinchum.
The 8-7 lead was short lived, however, as Guilford tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 11-8 lead. The Tigers cut into the lead in the top of the sixth with Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) scoring Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester).
Guilford again extended its lead two runs in both the sixth and seventh to take a 15-9 advantage.
In the top of the eighth, Brownell batted in Harrelson, and then scored a run of his own on a Lewis RBI. The Tigers' two runs were not enough, as they took the 15-11 loss.
In the second game, Hampden-Sydney was again able to get on the scoreboard first. Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) led off with a triple, and then scored on a Martin RBI.
The next two innings were all Guilford, as the Quakers exploded for five runs in the first and seven in the second.
A Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford)run in the fifth got Hampden-Sydney back on the scoreboard, but Guilford added five more runs heading into the sixth with a commanding 17-2 lead.
The Tigers were able to add one more run in the seventh with Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run)hitting a solo homerun.
Guilford pushed the lead by one more run to 18-3 with one more in the eighth.
On the day, Flinchum knocked in four RBI while going 3-for-5 from the plate. Harrelson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs. Brownell was 3-for-6 with one RBI, two runs and three doubles.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action at home on Wednesday, March 16 as they host the Captains of Christopher Newport University. The game is set for 3:30 pm.
