ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - Hampden-Sydney lacrosse, ranked 11th nationally, scored seven goals in the third quarter to run past Elizabethtown College 11-1 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers managed just two goals in the first 30 minutes of action as Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) put the Tigers on board with 12:13 left in the first quarter. Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) notched a man-up goal off a Jake McDonald (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) assist with 10:25 left in the half to carry the Tigers to a 2-0 lead at halftime.
After getting off to a slow start on the offensive end, the flood gates opened after intermission. Keller got his second goal of the game at the 11:20 mark of the third. Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River)scored a minute later off a pass from Keller. Keller added his third goal of the game with 8:56 to go in the third stanza while Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) founded the back of the net 30 seconds later. Etown's Greg Kenneally posted the Blue Jays only goal of the game at 5:36.
Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) continued the net scorching with a tally from Bobby Fulton (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) at 3:39. Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) finished off a Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) assist at 1:25 while Cundy converted on a Mavromatis assist to close out the third quarter. Kyle Fox (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) and Jess Hawthorne tallied fourth quarter goals to provide the final score of 11-1.
Keller paced the Tiger offense with three goals and one assist while Jess Hawthorne and Cundy each provided two goals. Mavromatis and Cole Hawthorne contributed two points each off a goal and an assist.Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling, NY) went 6-12 on face-offs with four groundballs. Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) played 45 minutes in the cage to earn the win, allowing just one goal with nine saves. Austin Black (Dallas, TX/Plano) played the last 15 minutes at goalkeeper and finished with five saves.
The Tiger defense held the Blue Jays to an 0-for-8 day on extra-man opportunities and forced them into 19 turnovers as H-SC put the clamps on the Blue Jay attack. H-SC outshot EC 27-19 while each team showed a remarkable ability to force the goalies to make saves as the Tigers had 22 shots on goal and Elizabethtown 15. Hampden-Sydney had 14 saves while the Blue Jays had 11. H-SC won eight of the games 14 face-offs and also held a 33-27 advantage in groundballs.
Hampden-Sydney will host Washington & Lee University on Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m. in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
