Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA-Hampden-Sydney (2-2, 0-0) had a tough outing falling 13-0 on the road as the Christopher Newport (1-0, 0-0) bats were alive. The Captains were lifted by a nine run second inning that included a Matt Shoemaker grand slam.
The Tigers recorded the first hit of the game with freshman Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) reaching safely on a two-out double.
Freshman starter James Shahayda (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) cruised through the bottom half of the frame, allowing the leadoff batter on base while retiring the next three.
The Captains, however, exploded in second inning to the tune of nine runs to take a commanding lead. Christopher Newport extended its lead with two more runs in the third.
Hampden-Sydney tried to respond with three hits in the top of the fourth, but could not score.
In the bottom of the fourth, Connor Paul (Midlothian, VA/Blessed Huguenot) came in and slowed down the Newport bats. He pitched two full innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.
Freshman Connor Bradley (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) pitched one scoreless inning, while sophomore Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) and freshman John McCann (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) each surrendered one run in their respective one inning.
Kuhns was the high hitter for the Tigers, as he was 2-for-2 with a double.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action this Saturday, February 12 as they host a double header against Stevenson University. The first game will start at noon.
