Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-After eight scoreless innings and a combined seven hits, Ferrum College posted two runs on three hits in the top of the ninth inning to secure the 2-0 win over Hampden-Sydney. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 2-1 on the young season, while Ferrum now stands at 1-0.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Pullen (Severn, MD/Calvary Baptist) was solid in his collegiate debut, pitching five innings while allowing just two hits. He allowed a double in the first inning, but did not surrender another hit until the top of the fifth.
Though Pullen was keeping Ferrum off the base paths, Chris Walker was doing the same on the mound for the Panthers. In six innings of work, Walker allowed no runs on just two just while striking out nine batters.
In the sixth inning, leadoff man Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) reached first on a walk, and then stole second. Walker was dominant, however, leaving Williams stranded at second by striking out the next three batters.
Ferrum came close to scoring in the seventh inning when Eddie McGrath was walked, stole second and then advanced to third on a Jason Parker single. Senior pitcher Kyle Grantier (Danville, VA/George Washington) though was able to get out of the inning unscathed by striking out the final batter.
In the top of the ninth, Ferrum led off the inning with a Daniel Alvarez single. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second, and a Sammy Holloway single moved him to third. Parker then knocked down a sacrifice bunt that brought Alvarez home. Holloway then reached home on a Peter Byron single.
Down 2-0, Hampden-Sydney could not get a hit on Morgan Boles as it took its first loss of the season.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action this Wednesday, February 9 as they travel to face the Captains of Christopher Newport for a 3:00 pm game.
