Box Score GREENSBORO, NC-Hampden-Sydney combined great offense with solid pitching and fielding to improve to 5-2 with an 11-1 victory over Greensboro College. The Tigers strung together 13 hits, including a 4-for-6 performance from senior Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington). Williams also knocked in five runs, stole two bases, and scored a run of his own.
Greensboro took the early lead, using two hits and a sacrifice fly ball to take the 1-0 lead in after the first inning.
From that point on, however, junior James Shahayda (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) allowed just one hit in his remaining five innings of work. Senior Kyle Grantier (Danville, VA/George Washington) pitched two innings without allowing a hit, and junior Nick Caporale (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) accomplished the same task in one inning of work.
Hampden-Sydney began its scoring in the fourth inning. Caporale was the first to score on a Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) RBI single. Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) later recorded the second RBI of the inning while batting in Colby Carter (Manakin-Sabot, VA/Goochland).
In the top of the fifth, the Tigers expanded their lead to 5-1 with three runs. Alan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) got the action started with a single and stolen base. Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) then slapped an RBI double into right field. Caporale then hit a single to score Harrelson. Caporale was then brought home by a Carter RBI.
Zeb Cope (Advance, NC/Davie County) pushed the lead to 6-1 in the sixth when he scored on a Williams RBI. The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the eighth, with Williams batting in two more runs with Wind and Cope scoring.
Cope scored one more time, along with Lewis, on a two-RBI single from Williams in the ninth. On the day, Cope was 1-for-3 with three runs and Caporale was 2-for-4 with two runs and one run.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action this Friday, February 18 as it faces off against Moravian in the first day of the Fourth Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament. The two teams will play at 3:00 PM.
