LEXINGTON, VA (APRIL 24, 2010)– The #1 seeded and defending ODAC Champion Hampden-Sydney tennis team moved one step closer to repeating as champions with a decisive 5-0 win over #5 seeded Roanoke College. In similar fashion to yesterday's win over Virginia Wesleyan, the Tigers swept the three doubles matches, then won the first two singles matches to clinch the victory.
The no. 2 doubles team of junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) started things out for the tigers with a convincing 8-0 victory. The no. 3 pair of juniors Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) also made quick work of their opponents, winning their match 8-3. The no. 1 doubles team of senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) faced a stiff challenge, but prevailed in their match by a score of 8-6 to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead after doubles play.
Hampden-Sydney continued their solid play in singles, with Harrell the first to win at no. 3 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Calhoun followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the no. 4 spot to clinch the match for the Tigers by a score of 5-0. At the time of the decision, Covington was up by a set at the no. 5 slot, and Pack had just begun play in the first set at the no. 6 spot.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 15-3 on the season and advance to the ODAC Championship Match where they will try to repeat last year's performance. They'll have the chance to do it against the same opponent as they will face the #2 seeded Generals of Washington and Lee, who the Tigers beat 5-4 in last year's championship match, and again earlier this season.
