TIGERS DROP WASHINGTON COLLEGE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (APRIL 22, 2010)– The #27 Hampden-Sydney Tennis Tigers finished out their regular season in style, topping the #13 regionally-ranked Shoremen of Washington College in a close match by a score of 5-4. It was a solid win for the Tigers, and an appropriate way to complete the careers of seniors William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and Richie Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti). Before the match, President Howard came out to congratulate and thank the two seniors for their outstanding contributions to Hampden-Sydney tennis.

At the no. 1 doubles spot, Moss and junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) overpowered their opponents, and cruised to an 8-1 victory. In no. 2 doubles, junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) were up against Washington's top two singles players and played well, but fell just short at 8-5. The no. 3 pair of junior Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) and junior Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) played a smart match and won 8-5 to put the Tigers up 2-1 heading into singles play.

Washington, however, fought back and won the no.5 and no. 6 singles matches to put them back on top by a score of 3-2. Pugh and Moss answered back for the Tigers, with Pugh winning at no. 2 by a 6-3, 6-1 score, and Moss taking care of the no. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win to put Hampden-Sydney back up 4-3. Needing to win one of the final two matches, Calhoun stepped up at the no. 4 spot and won a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 match to secure the contest for the Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney concludes the regular season with a 13-3 overall mark, including a perfect 6-0 home mark and an unblemished 9-0 ODAC record. The Tigers are heading into this weekend's ODAC tournament as the #1 seed, and will open up their title defense on Friday at 10:00 am as they play #8 seed Virginia Wesleyan. Live stats for that match are available here, and information for the rest of the tournament including the entire weekend's schedule of play is available here.
