Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (April 17, 2010)— The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse Tigers continued their winning ways and maintained their perfect road record today with a convincing 19-8 win at ODAC foe Guilford College. Hampden-Sydney has won 9 of its last 11 contests, and now boasts a season-high four game winning streak. The Tigers were led on the day by sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) who scored four goals, and senior Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk),who added two goals and three assists. Jett's five points on the day vaulted him into sole possession of third place in career points by a Hampden-Sydney midfielder with 135.
The Tigers jumped out to the early lead, with Jett striking less than one minute into the game on an unassisted effort. Sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) followed that with a goal of his own off of an assist from freshman Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby), before Clarke scored his first off of a setup from Jett. After the Quakers scored their first goal to pull to 3-1, Keller again scored on an assist from Martin, then followed it up with another strike on an assist from Clarke. Clarke then scored two more goals sandwiched around a Guilford goal to make the score at the end of one quarter of play 7-2 in favor of the Tigers.
Hampden-Sydney again struck first in the second period when senior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) took a pass from Jett and buried it for an 8-2 lead. Guilford then proceeded to score three straight goals to pull within three, but the Tigers added four more before the half to put some distance between the two teams. Senior Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) started the spurt on a goal with an assist from Clarke, then Jett took a Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry)pass and buried it for another goal. Martin and Kelly each added another goal to make the halftime score 12-6 in favor of the visitors.
The Tigers closed the door on whatever glimmer of hope Guilford had left in the third quarter, scoring three straight goals to open second-half play. Clarke scored an unassisted goal, then sophomore Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) got in on the action, scoring his first of the day. Freshman Alex Clay (Alexandira, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) then scored his first career goal on an assist from Jett to make the score 15-6.
After Guilford struck first in the fourth quarter, it was all Hampden-Sydney the rest of the way, with the Tigers scoring the last four goals of the game. Coats started the spurt with his second goal of the day, before senior Mario Washington (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) scored two straight himself. Senior Peter Squire (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) finished off the scoring with a goal with five minutes remaining in the game to make the final score 19-8.
On the day, the Tigers outshot the Quakers by a margin of 47 to 18, and grabbed 42 ground balls to 20 for Guilford. Hampden-Sydney also won 18 of 29 face-offs, and senior captain Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) made three saves in earning the win. With the victory, Hampden-Sydney improves to 10-4 overall, including 4-2 in the ODAC. The Tigers will next take to the field on Wednesday, April 21st as they travel to Newport News to take on Christopher Newport. Face-off for the game is set for 3:00 pm.
