HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 15, 2010)– The Hampden-Sydney tennis team continued its winning ways yesterday with a convincing 8-1 win over ODAC rival Randolph-Macon College. The Tigers swept the doubles matches and won five out of six singles matchups to secure the victory.

Hampden-Sydney stormed out of the gates in the doubles matchups, winning all three in dominant fashion. The no. 1 team of senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and juniorRich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) were just too much for their opponent and won 8-0. In no. 2 doubles, the team of junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) matched the 8-0 winning margin of the no. 1 team. In the no. 3 slot, juniors Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) also cruised to an easy win by a score of 8-1 to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers' solid play carried over into the singles matchups, where the home side took five out of six. At no. 1 singles, Moss dispatched of his challenger by a 6-0, 6-1 margin. At the no. 2 spot, Harrell posted an identical score in taking care of his opponent 6-0, 6-1. Senior Richie Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) played no. 3 singles, and was very solid in his 6-1, 6-2 victory. Sophomore Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) won his second singles match in two days with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win, and freshman Franklin Bowers (New Bern, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers with a nice 6-3, 6-2 win.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 11-1on the season and 8-0 in the ODAC. The Tigers are right back in action today, however, as they host ODAC opponent Bridgewater College at 3:30 pm.
