HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 14, 2010)– The Hampden-Sydney tennis team got back on the winning track yesterday with an easy win over the Pride of Greensboro College. After a two week break from competition following their first loss of the season, the Tigers dispatched of Greensboro by a score of 9-0.
Hampden-Sydney started out strong in the doubles matchups, taking all three matches. The no. 1 team of senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) won their match with solid, consistent play by a score of 8-3. In no. 2 doubles, the team of junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) continued their solid play with an 8-2 win, and in the no. 3 slot, juniors Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) were dominant, winning their match 8-0.
The Tigers continued to roll in the singles matches, also sweeping every match. At no. 1 singles, Calhoun took care of his opponent by a 6-2, 6-1 tally. Covington, playing at no. 2, also made quick work of his opponent, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win. Pack stepped in to the no. 3 spot and took care of business as well, dispatching of his opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) saw his first action of the day at no. 4, and played a solid match to win 6-0, 6-4. Sophomore Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George), playing at no. 5, also took care of his opponent relatively quickly, taking the match 6-0, 6-4. Sophomore Barrett Polan (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) wrapped things up for the Tigers at no. 6, winning 6-3, 6-2 and completing the sweep.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 10-1on the season and remain a perfect 7-0 in the ODAC. Hampden-Sydney has no time to rest, however, as they will host ODAC rival Randolph-Macon today at 3:30. The match will be the second of five matches in six days for the Tigers.
