Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 14, 2010)— The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team honored its seniors playing in their final home game today in a ceremony before the game, then sent them out as winners with a thorough 15-1 victory over ODAC opponent Randolph College. The Tigers never trailed in the game, and a season-high 13 different players scored goals for Hampden-Sydney.
The Tigers got onto the board first just over a minute into play when senior captain Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) scored an unassisted goal. Jett struck again six minutes later to put the Tigers up 2-0. On the ensuing face-off, senior Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) controlled the draw, raced through the Wildcat defense and buried a shot for a three-goal lead. Senior Hunter Phillips (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored his first goal of the season with just under three minutes to play in the half to put Hampden-Sydney 8-0, before classmate Mario Washington (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) made a nice move to find the back of the net with under one minute left. The Tigers dominated every aspect of the first half, outshooting Randolph 39-2, winning 10 of 12 face-offs, and grabbing 40 groundballs to 13 for the Wildcats.
Jess Hawthorne got the second half scoring started with an unassisted goal one minute into the third quarter, before junior Ryan Grodzki (Barrington, IL/Barrington) scored his first career goal on a solo effort seven minutes later. Randolph's Stephen Allman scored the Wildcats' lone goal of the day with three and a half minutes left, before sophomore Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) struck on an assist from sophomore Kyle Fox (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) to put the Tigers up 13-1 at the end of three quarters.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, freshman Jacob Oliver (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored his first career goal, before senior Peter Squire (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) punctuated his senior day with his first career goal to make the final margin 15-1 for Hampden-Sydney. On the day, the Tigers were very evenly balanced and dominated the statistical categories. They posted season highs in shots with 64 and in ground balls with 62, and only committed 11 turnovers. Seniors Peter Foley (Mclean, VA/Langley) and Joey Severns (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), along with Oliver and junior Nick West (New Canaan, CT/The Gunnery) each caused two Randolph turnovers as well.
