ROANOKE, VA (March 31, 2010)– Fresh off of entering the ITA national rankings for the first time in quite some time, the #23 Hampden-Sydney tennis team continued their momentum, dispatching of ODAC opponent Emory and Henry by a score of 9-0. It was the second win in two days for the Tigers.

In singles play, Hampden-Sydney was dominant, sweeping the six matches. At the no. 1 spot, senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) was up 5-1 in the first set when his opponent retired, while junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin), playing in the no. 2 slot, won his match 6-3, 6-2 with very steady play. Sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) faced the stiffest competition of the day at no. 3 singles, but eventually took care of his opponent 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. At the no. 4 spot, junior Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) overpowered his opponent to emerge 6-3, 6-0, and that was the same margin that junior Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry)won by at the no. 5 spot. In the no. 6 singles, sophomore Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring)stepped in and used his power to prevail 6-2, 6-2 and give the Tigers the singles sweep.

Due to the absence of junior Rich Pugh, the no. 1 doubles team consisted of Harrell and Calhoun, and they were up to the challenge, playing well together and winning their match 8-6. The no. 2 team of Moss and senior Kenneth Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) took care of their opponents 8-2, and the no. 3 team of Covington and Pack also took their match 8-4, to finish off the Wasps.

With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 9-0 on the season, including a 7-0 ODAC ledger. The Tigers' next match will come on Friday in Fredericksburg, VA, against #14 nationally ranked Salisbury in what should be an exciting match. The match is scheduled to start at 4:00 pm.
