GREENSBORO, NC (March 30, 2010)– The Hampden-Sydney tennis team continued their winning ways yesterday at ODAC foe Guilford College, defeating the Quakers 8-1 and running their impressive season record to 8-0, including a 6-0 ODAC mark. After sweeping the doubles matches, the Tigers took five of the six singles matches to secure the victory.
In the doubles matchups, the no. 1 team of senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) faced a stiff challenge, but were able to prevail 9-8 (7-3). In no. 2 doubles, the team of junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) played an excellent match and won by a score of 8-1. In the no. 3 slot, juniors Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) also took care of business, winning their match by a margin of 8-2.
At the no. 1 singles spot, Moss played an excellent match and prevailed by a score of 6-1, 6-1. At the no. 2 spot, Pugh rebounded from a tough match last week and dominated his opponent 6-0, 6-0. In no. 3 singles, Harrell continued his solid play as of late, taking his match 6-1, 6-3. In the no. 4 slot, Calhoun displayed some very solid play and took down his opponent by a 6-0, 6-1 margin. Covington, at the no. 5 spot, also took care of business, topping his opponent 7-5, 6-1.
The 8-0 start to the season is the best start for Head Coach Murrie Bates in his four years at the helm. Hampden-Sydney will look to improve to 9-0 this afternoon when they take on ODAC opponent Emory and Henry in Roanoke, VA at 4:00 pm.
