Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC (March 27, 2010)— The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team put together a complete effort today in their game against Greensboro College, topping the Pride by a score of 15-5. The five goals allowed was the Tiger defense's best performance so far this season, and the 15 goal output was also the second most goals scored in a game this year. With the win, Hampden-Sydney maintained their perfect road record so far this season.

Sophomore Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) set the tone for the Tigers early, scoring a goal four minutes into the action. Sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry)followed Cundy's goal with a strike of his own less than 30 seconds later, before senior captainKyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) scored with eight minutes left in the first quarter to give Hampden-Sydney an early 3-0 lead. Greensboro was able to get on the scoreboard one minute later to make the first quarter score 3-1 in favor of the visitors.

The Tigers were able to dominate the majority of the second quarter, scoring five straight goals to start the action. Freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) started the second period scoring with a goal just one minute into play. Jett struck again minutes later, before junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) added a goal with nine minutes left on the scoreboard. Senior Andrew O'Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) struck next for the Tigers, before sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) capped the spurt to make the score 8-1 with two minutes left in the half. Greensboro, however, did not give in and fought back with three quick goals before the half to make the score 8-4.

The Tigers were able to use some half time motivation to alleviate any doubt about who was in control of the game, scoring the first four goals of the period to put some distance between the two teams. Sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) had an outstanding quarter, scoring Hampden-Sydney's first three goals over a nine minute span. Mostowy struck again with five minutes remaining in the quarter before Greensboro found the net late to make the third quarter score 12-5 in favor of the Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney continued to wear Greensboro down in the fourth quarter, adding three more goals to secure the victory. Clarke scored the first goal to give him four on the day, before senior Mario Washington (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) scored his first two goals of the season to seal the 15-5 win for the Tigers.

On the day, Clarke led the Tigers with four goals while Jett and Washington both added two. Keller paced Hampden-Sydney with three assists and Hawthorne contributed two of his own. On the defensive end, senior captain Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) was stellar in the goal, making 9 saves while allowing only five goals. The defensive unit, led by senior captain Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), junior Tim VanBenthuysen (Castle Rock, CO/Regis Jesuit) and sophomore Andrew Pritzlaff (Castle Rock, CO/Kent Denver) repeatedly shut down the Pride attack. The Tigers outshot Greensboro 47-36, won the groundball battle 32-18, and were an impressive 6 for 10 on extra man opportunities.

With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 5-3 on the season. The Tigers' next game is at #11 nationally ranked Washington & Lee in Lexington, VA on Wednesday, March 31st. Face-off for the game is set for 7:00 pm.
