LYNCHBURG, VA (March 17, 2010)– The #13 Hampden-Sydney tennis team didn't need any St. Patrick's Day luck in toppling the Hornets of Lynchburg College yesterday by a score of 9-0. The Tigers were too much for Lynchburg to handle across the board, winning every match without dropping a set. It was an impressive effort from Hampden-Sydney on their second of four matches in four days.

The no. 1 doubles team of senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA) and junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) got things started for the Tigers with a convincing 8-0 win. Their teammates followed suit, with junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) taking their match 8-3, and juniors Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) winning their matchup 8-1.

Hampden-Sydney kept the momentum rolling for the singles matches, winning all six matchups without dropping a set. Moss used his excellent all court game to win his match without dropping a game at the no. 1 spot. In the no. 2 slot, Pugh was precise in outhitting his opponent for a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Harrell showed good consistency in his match for a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Calhoun constructed points nicely in dropping his opponent 6-0, 6-1, while Covington overpowered his adversary in not dropping a single game. Pack finished off the day for the Tigers by working his opponent around the court for a 6-3, 6-2 victory to give Hampden-Sydney the sweep.

With the win, the Tigers record improves to 4-0, including a 2-0 ODAC mark. Hampden-Sydney continues their road trip today as they take on the Wildcats of Randolph College at 4:00 in another ODAC tilt. Hampden-Sydney will return home tomorrow as they host #6 ranked Washington & Lee at 3:00.
