LYNCHBURG, VA (April 15, 2009)—In a back and forth first half, the Tigers stuck with the #17 Lynchburg Hornets and went into intermission dead even at 6-6. Lynchburg's Dylan Hoff started the scoring at the 12:31 mark, but after a four minute scoring drought, Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport) ripped a shot to the back of the net off of a great feed from freshman Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry). The Hornets responded with a goal of their own, but Mavromatis and Mathison connected one more time to yet again tie the game at 2-2. Before the end of the first quarter, Lynchburg struck two more times to go up 4-2 at the end of the first stanza.

The second quarter began with a Tiger rally as Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton), Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) and Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) all netted goals to put the Tigers up 5-4 with 11:44 to go in the break.

Eddie Bilinkas scored for Lynchburg two minutes later, but Keller was not finished for the half ripping his second goal of the night with under two minutes to play in the half. Bilinkas, however, struck one more time to even the score at 6-6 with 41 seconds before halftime.

Though the first half was dead even, the Hornets proved to be too much for Hampden-Sydney starting the second half on a 4-0 run over the first seven minutes.

Sophomore Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) broke up the Hornet attack scoring a goal of his own at the 7:03 mark, bringing his Tigers back within three. Hawthorne netted the only goal for Hampden-Sydney in the third quarter, but Lynchburg was not finished as they notched two more goals courtesy Kyle Fortman and Michael Mundorf.

Hampden-Sydney would be held to one goal again in the fourth quarter, but this time it was Mavromatis who struck. In a 12-8 game, Lynchburg reeled off the final three goals of the game to capture the 15-8 victory.

Mavromatis has a solid game for the Tigers with one goal, three assists, and four groundballs. JuniorMark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) led the team in groundballs with nine while having 11 saves. The Tigers were led in scoring by Mathison and Keller who each had two goals.

The Tigers were edged in both shots (33-30) and groundballs (35-33), but won the face-off battle 15-10.

With the loss, the Tigers fall to 6-7 on the year and 3-2 in the ODAC.

Hampden-Sydney will return home for their final two regular season games. The first is the final ODAC match up on Saturday, April 18 as they host #5 Washington & Lee at 1:00 pm.
