VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (March 9, 2009)– The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team played two matches this past weekend, defeating Virginia Wesleyan 9-0 and then falling to #23 Christopher Newport 6-3.

The Tigers faced Virginia Wesleyan on Friday and were in control the entire match. Sophomore Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill School) was able to win in convincing fashion with a 6-0, 6-0 finish. Junior Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) won in the No. 1 spot, defeating Steven Wright 6-1, 6-2.

With the win over Virginia Wesleyan, Hampden-Sydney remains undefeated in conference play improving to 2-0 in the ODAC.

The Tigers had a quick turn around facing a very tough Christopher Newport team the very next morning. Though the Tigers fell 6-3, each match was incredibly competitive with long, hard fought points. Moss again played at the No. 1 spot, defeating the 8th seed in the region Eric Shulman 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Sophomore Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) was able to get a convincing win in his first match of 2009, defeating Lorenzo Sison 6-4, 6-2.

With the Tigers' split this weekend, they move to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, March 17 as the Tigers return home to take on Ferrum College at 3:30 pm.
