TIGERS TAKE TOUGH ROAD LOSS AT #2 GETTYSBURG, 18-7

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, PA (February 28, 2009)—Though Hampden-Sydney controlled the first face-off and rattled off the first two shots of the game, it was Gettysburg who had all the early momentum in the Bullets' 18-7 victory. Gettysburg fired off 16 shots in the first quarter to take the 7-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Gettysburg would reel off four more goals before sophomore midfielder Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) found the back of the net to put the Tigers onto the scoreboard. Unfortunately for Hampden-Sydney, Gettysburg added two more points to the scoreboard making the halftime score 13-1.

Hampden-Sydney did see more success in the third quarter as they scored three straight goals from seniors Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) and Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport).

The Tigers, though trailing 17-4 going into the fourth quarter, outscored the Bullets 3-1 in the final quarter. Mahoney and Mathison were again the two Tigers to beat the keeper.

Mahoney and Mathison both paced the Tigers at two goals a piece while junior Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) and freshman Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) each recorded two assists. Gettysburg had the leading scorer of the game in Kyle McGrath who boasted five goals and two assists.

Junior net minder Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) recorded 16 saves on day. Gettysburg edged the Tigers in groundballs (36-16) and shots (46-36).

The Tigers will return to action at home on Saturday, March 7 as they take on Marymount College at 2:00pm.
