Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (April 9, 2008) – Tigers' senior midfielder Robbie Thomas (Latham, NY/Trinity Pawling) scored a game-high three goals to lead Hampden-Sydney's lacrosse team to a 14-7 victory over host Guilford College. Hampden-Sydney placed nine players in the scoring column, including junior Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's), sophomore Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond Suffolk) and freshman Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) who each notched two goals apiece. Senior goalie Phil Hage (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy) registered ten saves on the afternoon in just under 46 minutes of work in the cage. With the win, Hampden-Sydney evens its record to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC, while the Quakers fall to 2-8, 0-3 in conference.
With the score knotted at one late in the first period, the Tigers erupted for three goals in the final 3:14 of the quarter, the last courtesy of Thomas with six seconds remaining, to take a 4-1 advantage into the second period. After Guilford's F.J. Ientile scored with 12:34 remaining in the second frame to close the Quakers within 5-2, the Tigers went on a 4-0 spurt to close the half, getting goals from junior Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport), Thomas, sophomore Andrew O'Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) and Carpenter to take a 9-2 lead into the locker room.
Both teams traded strikes to begin the second half before the Tigers went on another run, this time the 3-0 variety concluding with Carpenter's second goal with 7:31 to play in the third period, giving the Tigers a 13-4 advantage heading into the final quarter. Hampden-Sydney surrendered just three goals in the final 15 minutes of action to claim the win.
The Tigers out-shot Guilford 39-37 for the contest with the Quakers holding a 45-37 edge in ground balls. Guilford's Joe Dauksis and Ientile led their respective squad with two goals each.
Hampden-Sydney returns to ODAC action on Saturday, April 12 when it hosts conference rival Roanoke College to Lewis C. Everett stadium for a 1 pm face-off.
