SALEM, VA (April 7, 2008)–Spurred by a dominating singles performance by top hitter Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and three gutsy victories in doubles, the Hampden-Sydney tennis team continued to impress, scoring a sound 7-2 triumph over defending ODAC runner-up and 16th-ranked Roanoke College on Monday afternoon. The Tigers, who improve to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in ODAC play, are poised to capture the school's first ever regional ranking when new Atlantic South region rankings are released today. Hampden-Sydney now sits alone in second place in the ODAC standings. With the loss, Roanoke falls to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in conference.

Hampden-Sydney set the tone early with three doubles victories. Moss and teammate Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) pieced together a 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over the Maroons' Hart Callahan and Kyle Allen. Tigers' freshman duo Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) notched an 8-4 victory in the second slot, before the Hampden-Sydney pair of Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill School) and Richie Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) came from the brink of defeat at 4-7 to capture a 9-7 (7-2) triumph, giving Hampden-Sydney an important 3-0 lead.

The Tigers' depth was on display during the singles portion of the match. Moss cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Roanoke No. 1 Callahan, but Hampden-Sydney dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 singles decisions in hard fought matches. However, Pack dispatched of the Maroons' Sam Jordan 6-1, 6-3 at the fourth slot, while Covington and senior Andrew McLeod (Mandeville, Jamaica/Manchester) pulled out their opening sets before scoring easy second set victories.

Hampden-Sydney will be back in the midst of ODAC action when it hosts arch-rival Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, April 9. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 pm.
