Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (April 2, 2008) – Hampden-Sydney's Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's)continued to capitalize on his hot hand, as the junior midfielder registered four goals and one assist to lead the Tigers to a 15-7 road victory over Greensboro College on Wednesday afternoon. Ten Tigers reached the scoring column as Hampden-Sydney sprinted out to an 8-2 halftime advantage and never relented, thanks in part to another solid performance by senior goalie Phil Hage (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy), who recorded ten saves while allowing just five goals. Hampden-Sydney (4-4) claims its second straight win while the Pride fall to 2-8 on the season.
The Tigers scored early and often in the contest, racing out to a 3-0 lead just 2:50 into the first quarter on goals from junior attackman Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport), sophomore midfielderKyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond Suffolk) and junior attackman Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton). Greensboro fought back to cut the Tigers' lead to 3-2 at the 3:09 mark of the first quarter, but Carpenter notched his first strike of the game just before the end of the period to give Hampden-Sydney a 4-2 lead.
The Tigers' offense continued to spread the wealth in the second stanza. As the Hampden-Sydney defense stiffened and shut out the Pride attack in the second fifteen minutes, Andrew O'Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate), Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) and Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) contributed goals of their own before Mathison struck for a second time with 2:35 remaining in the first half, handing Hampden-Sydney the 8-2 lead at the break.
After Greensboro's Brandon Savage brought the Pride within 8-3 to begin the second half, the Tigers scored four unanswered goals – one by Hovis, another by senior defenseman Alex Pritzlaff (Castle Rock, CO/Kent Denver) and two more by Carpenter – to push the lead to 12-3 with 13:22 to play in the game.
The Tiger reserves closed the game in style, with sophomore attackman Hunter Phillips (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) and junior attackman Teddy Schwab (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) finding the net for each player's first goal of the season.
Carpenter's five points led the Hampden-Sydney attack while five other Tigers – Hovis, Jett, Mahoney, Mathison and O'Shea – tallied two points apiece. Freshman Bill Tunney (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) turned in a solid performance, winning 11-of-17 face-off opportunities and scooping seven ground balls. Senior Kyle Frazier (Forest, VA/Virginia Episcopal), who played a second consecutive strong game on defense, and sophomore Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) each picked up four ground balls in the winning effort.
The Pride were led by Jose Rodriguez's two goals. Greensboro out-shot the Tigers 34-31, but Hampden-Sydney won the ground ball battle, 39-31.
The Tigers return to action this Saturday, April 5 when they welcome Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Virginia Wesleyan to Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium for a 1 pm face-off on Lacrosse Alumni Weekend.
