Box Score

LEXINGTON, VA (April 19, 2008) – Washington and Lee attackman Harry St. John scored five goals and assisted on another to lead the Generals to a 15-8 victory over visiting Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon. Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond Suffolk) led the Tigers' charge with four goals of his own, but Washington and Lee turned an early 3-2 deficit into a 8-5 halftime advantage before outscoring the Tigers 7-3 in the second half to claim the conference win. The loss drops Hampden-Sydney to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC while Washington and Lee improves to 8-5, 4-1 in conference play.

Both squads began the game hot on the offensive end of the field, trading goals for the first 9:41 of the opening period. Washington and Lee's Logan Bartlett managed to score both the closing goal of the first quarter and the opening goal of the second period to give the hosts a 5-3 lead with 12:48 to play in the first half. Hampden-Sydney junior Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) cut the Generals' lead to 5-4 with a strike at the 9:10 mark of the frame, but Washington and Lee enjoyed a 3-0 scoring run over the next six minutes to claim a 8-4 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half.

Jett notched his second goal of the afternoon with six seconds on the second quarter clock to bring Hampden-Sydney within 8-5 at the break.

After Bartlett connected for the third time to begin the third period of action, Jett answered less than 30 seconds later to again draw the Tigers within three goals at 9-6. However, the Generals caught fire, running off five unanswered goals, ending with a Will Englehart strike at 7:41 in the fourth period to give Washington and Lee its largest margin of the contest, 14-6.

Mahoney and Jett managed two goals within a minute to cut the deficit to six, but too little time remained and the Generals secured a lock on the second spot in the ODAC with the victory.

In addition to Jett's four tallies, Mahoney chipped in with three goals and an assist, with sophomore midfielder Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) also registering a goal. Tigers' net minderPhil Hage (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy) gave a valiant effort between the pipes, making 14 saves and scooping eight ground balls.

Reigning ODAC Player of the Week Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling) recorded one assist and picked up four ground balls in the loss.

Washington and Lee out-shot the Tigers 43-20 while also winning the ground ball battle, 41-32. The Generals were successful on 17-of-27 face-off opportunities.

Hampden-Sydney returns to conference action on Wednesday, April 23 when it hosts ODAC leader Lynchburg College on Senior Day at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Face-off is scheduled for 4 pm.
