Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA (March 5, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney junior attackman Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) notched three goals while senior midfielder Joe Daugherty (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) and sophomore midfielder Andrew O'Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate)combined for seven assists to lead the Tigers to a solid 17-9 victory over host Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers (2-1) placed 14 different players into the scoring column and rode a 6-1 first quarter advantage to claim the win. With the loss, Christopher Newport falls to 1-3.
The Tigers leapt out to a quick 4-1 lead in the opening period behind two goals each from sophomore midfielder Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond Suffolk) and Mahoney. Senior midfielder Mark Miller (Esmont, VA/Monticello) pushed the Hampden-Sydney lead to 5-1 with a goal at the 2:38 mark in the first quarter and junior midfielder Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) closed the opening stanza with a scoring strike at 0:12 to give the Tigers a 6-1 advantage after 15 minutes of play.
The two teams played to a stalemate for much of the second period until Christopher Newport's Chris Quigley scored with 6:31 to play in the first half, cutting the Hampden-Sydney lead to 6-2. The Tigers wasted little time responding, as O'Shea and junior attackman Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport) answered to give Hampden-Sydney an 8-2 advantage at halftime.
The Tigers continued to put pressure on the Captains' defense, outscoring Christopher Newport 6-3 in the third period behind goals from Daugherty, senior Kyle Frazier (Forest, VA/Virginia Episcopal), freshman Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate), Mahoney, and sophomores Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and Ben Archambault (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha). Hampden-Sydney led 14-5 after the third, and went on to capture the non-conference win.
Hampden-Sydney out-shot Christopher Newport 29-28 and held a decisive advantage in ground balls (67-31) and face-offs won (20-29). Senior defenseman Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling)controlled the ground game, scooping a game-high ten ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) won 7-of-8 face-offs while freshman Bill Tunney (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) contributed one goal and 13-of-21 face-off opportunities.
Sophomore defenseman Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) turned in a solid effort on the back line for Coach Rostan's unit.
Christopher Newport was led by Jon Ims' three goals and one assist. The Captains converted on just 2-of-10 man-up opportunities.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Arlington, VA to square off with Marymount University. Game time is set for 1 pm.
