HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 28, 2008)–Hampden-Sydney's tennis team improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference after claiming a 9-0 win over conference foe Bridgewater College on Friday afternoon. The Tigers' toughness and resiliency was on display throughout the match as the squad emerged triumphant in several tight battles.
The final count was certainly deceiving as the Eagles presented the Tigers with competitive matches across the board, nearly stealing wins in the top two doubles contests. Hampden-Sydney top pair Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) narrowly edged Bridgewater No. 1 doubles duo Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke, 8-6. The Tigers' freshman combo ofShad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) battled to a 9-7 triumph at No. 2 doubles over the Eagles' Chris Radke and Colin Saunders.
Freshman Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill School) and sophomore Kenneth Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) teamed up to capture an 8-3 doubles victory at No. 3.
In singles, Hampden-Sydney top hitter Moss led the Tigers' charge, ousting Remsch 6-1, 6-1, followed by Pugh who outlasted the Eagles' Ryan Radke 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2. Each Tiger player turned in solid performances with Harrell, Pack and Covington earning impressive wins and senior Andrew McLeod (Mandeville, Jamaica/Manchester) registering a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the final singles slot.
The Tigers return to conference play next Wednesday, April 2 as the team travels to Greensboro, NC to square off with Guilford College. Match time is set for 3:30 pm.
