LYNCHBURG, VA (March 20, 2008)–Hampden-Sydney's tennis team dropped just 16 total games en route to a 9-0 victory over ODAC-foe Lynchburg College, improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Facing their strongest competition of the young season, the Tigers turned in terrific performances in the win, setting the stage for their showdown Friday afternoon against the defending ODAC champion Washington and Lee University Generals.
Sophomore Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) defeated Lynchburg's Kristian Richardson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Freshmen Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside), Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill School) scored victories in No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, while seniorAndrew McLeod (Mandeville, Jamaica/Manchester) and sophomore Kenneth Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) cleaned up at No. 5 and No. 6 singles with straight-set wins.
Freshman Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) teamed up with Harrell to earn an 8-1 doubles triumph over the Hornets' pair of Marc Halley and Brian Nelson.
The Tigers return to the court this afternoon, Friday, March 21 as they put their undefeated ODAC mark on the line against defending conference champion Washington and Lee at 3:30 pm on the campus of Hampden-Sydney.
