HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 28, 2007)—For the second consecutive game, sophomoreKenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/ Northport) and junior Kelly Mattie (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) lead the Tigers with four goals each as the Tigers scored a 19-4 victory over Christopher Newport University at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff field on Wednesday. The Tigers jumped out to an early 8-2 first quarter lead and cruised on for the 19-4 victory. With the win, the Tigers improve to 7-1 overall, while the Captains fall to 4-2 on the season.

Seven different Tigers scored a goal in the first frame, giving Hampden-Sydney the 8-2 first quarter advantage. The Tigers would add eight more goals in the second period, while the Captains were only able to find the net once, making the halftime score, 16-3.

In the second half, the defenses seemed to prevail as there were only four goals scored in the final 30 minutes of play, including shut-outs by both teams in the fourth quarter. The Tigers did outscore the Captains 3-1 in the third, giving the Tigers the 19-4 decision.

Ten different Tigers scored goals. Among the leaders were Mathison and Mattie with four goals, while Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) added three goals. Junior Joe Daugherty (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfied) scored two goals, while Middleton Smith (Stevenson, MD/ Boys' Latin) scored his first goal of the season and grabbed a game-high six ground balls.

Once again, senior Scott Russell (Darien, CT/Darien) recorded the victory for the Tigers in goal as he made two saves and allowed only three goals in only 30 minutes of play. Also providing a solid performance on the defensive end was Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling) with five ground balls.
