RADNOR, PA (March 17, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney's lacrosse team lost their first game of the season as they fell to Cabrini College in overtime on Saturday. Senior William Shell(Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's) gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead in the fourth quarter, but Cabrini was able to tie the game and earn the 7-6 overtime victory. With the loss, the 13th-ranked Tigers drop to 4-1 on the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 4-1 overall.
Hampden-Sydney jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Cabrini in the first quarter, but the Cavaliers answered with two goals of their own to cut the lead to one goal. Cabrini added two more goals in the second quarter, while the Tigers failed to find the back of the net, giving the Cavaliers a 4-3 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, seniors Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) and Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) scored to give Hampden-Sydney the 5-4 lead, but Cabrini answered to tie the score, 5-5. In the fourth quarter, Shell found the back of the net to give Hampden-Sydney the lead, 6-5, with 14:19 remaining to play. Three minutes later, the Cavaliers drew even on a B.J. Kletchek goal. Hampden-Sydney had several shots on goal in the final minutes of regulation; however, they were unable to convert, sending the game into overtime.
With 2:22 remaining in the first overtime period, Cabrini's Rich Romanelli scored to give the Cavaliers the 7-6 decision.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Saturday, March 24, as the Tigers will travel to Norfolk, VA to face ODAC-foe Virginia Wesleyan College. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
