Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 24, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney's lacrosse team opened the 2007 lacrosse season with an impressive 13-6 victory over Mary Washington on Saturday at the new Hellmuth-Pritzlaff field. The win marked the 200th victory for Head Coach Ray Rostan at Hampden-Sydney. With the win, the Tigers improve to 1-0, while the Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season.
Senior Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) scored four goals and dished out two assists in Hampden-Sydney's victory over Mary Washington. Also scoring four goals for the Tigers was senior William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's), who recorded one assist. Joe Daugherty (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) also had a solid performance for the Tigers as he scored two goals and recorded two assists.
The Tigers scored early and often as Hampden-Sydney scored five goals in the first quarter to jump out to a 5-1 lead over the Eagles. In the second quarter, the Tigers increased their lead on goals from Harrington and Shell. At halftime, the Tigers held a 7-2 advantage.
In the third quarter, Hampden-Sydney tacked on two more goals to build a comfortable 9-3 lead. The offenses of both squads woke up in the fourth quarter as there were a combined seven goals in the last 15 minutes.
Freshman Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) won 10-of-13 face-offs and grabbed nine groundballs, while Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling) recovered eight groundballs. Senior Scott Russell (Darien, CT/Darien) recorded the victory for the Tigers in goal.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Saturday, March 3, as the Tigers and Haverford College will play at St. Stephen's School in Alexandria, VA. The game is scheduled to start at 1:30 pm.
