Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (April 1, 2006)--Despite arriving late to the game, Hampden-Sydney wasted no time in clinching a 21-3 men's lacrosse win at Guilford in the Quakers' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener Saturday at the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Tigers' team bus broke down on the way to Greensboro, resulting in a one-hour, 45-minute delay to the game's start. The team taped ankles while awaiting another bus near Danville, VA. Following a short warm-up, Hampden-Sydney started in on its second straight convincing league win.
Senior attacker Vince Smith (Palmyra, VA/St. Anne's-Benfield) tallied two of his game-high five goals less than two minutes into the game and helped Hampden-Sydney to a 7-0 lead before Guilford's Will Carpenter (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) put the Quakers (3-5, 0-1 ODAC) on the board with 1:28 left in the first quarter. Guilford didn't score again until rookieJarrett Ziegler (Youngsville, NC/Southeast Raleigh) netted an extra-man goal 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, which made the score, 17-2.
Senior attackman Eamon Thornton (Atlanta, GA/McCallie School) added three goals and an assist for the Tigers, who had 12 different student-athletes tickle the twine. Junior midfielderThomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) and rookie midfielder Willis Taylor (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) both contributed two goals and an assist. Rookie attackman Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport) also scored twice. Starting goalie Scott Russell (Darien, CT/Darien) and junior Greg Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) made two saves apiece as five Hampden-Sydney goalies combined for six stops in goal. The Tigers enjoyed a 43-20 shots advantage and picked up 51 ground balls to Guilford's 32.
Freshman attackman Matthew Conrad (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) scored Guilford's third goal with 50 seconds left in the match. Sophomore goalie Andrew Vigne (Concord, MA/Middlesex) made 14 of Guilford's 17 saves in the game's first three quarters.
Guilford returns to action next Saturday (4/8) against visiting ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon. The Tigers play at Greensboro College Tuesday (4/4) at 3:30 p.m.
