Hampden-Sydney Finishes 10th At The Sam Snead Collegiate

FINAL RESULTS

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Oliver Tobin (Charlotte, NC) posted a team-best final round of one-over par 72 on Tuesday, while classmate Groves Williams (Greenville, SC) posted a team-best 54-hole score of 74-70-75—219, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a team score of 294-303-300—897 at the Sam Snead Collegiate played at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg. The Tigers finished 10th among the 21 teams in the collegiate golf event, while Williams tied for 14th individually among the 108 golfers. Additionally, sophomore Luke Combs (Newport News) had the first Hole-In-One of his collegiate career with a seven-iron from 177 yards on the par 3 third hole during his final round.

Williams had one birdie and 13 pars during his final round at the par 71, 6,817-yard Gold course, finishing with eight birdies and 34 pars. He was followed by junior team captain Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (73-77-75—225, T-45th), Tobin (79-77-72—228, T-62nd), freshman Matthew Teegardin (Charleston, SC) (74-79-78—231, T-71st) and Combs (73-81-79—233, T-78th). Barnes had two birdies and 10 pars, finishing with nine birdies and 29 pars. Tobin had two birdies and 13 pars, finishing with three birdies and 37 pars. Teegardin had two birdies and nine pars, finishing with five birdies and 31 pars. Combs had the rare hole-in-one (eagle) and 10 pars, finishing with the one eagle, seven birdies and 26 pars. It was Luke's second career hole-in-one, while his first as a collegian.

Tobin tied for third among the tournament field in pars (37). Combs tied for third in eagles (1) and tied for sixth in par 3 scoring (3.00). Williams tied for ninth in pars (34) and tied for 11th in par 4 scoring (4.09). Barnes tied for 16th in birdies (9).

Second-ranked Carnegie Mellon (PA) University won the tournament with its two-over par 289-286-279—854, while CMU's David Zhang took individual medalist honors at nine-under par 69-67-68—204.

H-SC will play again at the three-day, 54-hole Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships on April 19-21 at the Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst.
