Groves Williams (Greenville, SC) posted a 36-hole score of two-over par 74-70—144 on Monday to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a team score of 294-303—597 at the
Sam Snead Collegiate being played at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg. The Tigers are tied for fifth among the 21 teams in the collegiate golf event, while Williams is tied for seventh individually among the 108 golfers.
Williams had seven birdies and 21 pars during his two rounds at the par 71, 6,817-yard Gold course, and is being followed by junior team captain
Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (73-77—150, T-36th), freshman
Matthew Teegardin (Charleston, SC) (74-79—153, T-55th), along with sophomores
Luke Combs (Newport News) (73-81—154, T-65th) and
Oliver Tobin (Charlotte, NC) (79-77—156, T-69th). Barnes had seven birdies and 19 pars. Teegardin had three birdies and 22 pars. Combs had seven birdies and 16 pars. Tobin had one birdie and 23 pars.
Second-ranked Carnegie Mellon (PA) University is leading the tournament with its 289-286—757, while CMU's David Zhang is the individual leader at six-under par 69-67—136. The Tigers (294-303) are tied for fifth with 22nd-ranked Babson (MA) (305-292).
H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 54-hole tournament on Tuesday, April 14, beginning at 9 a.m. in Williamsburg.
