Hampden-Sydney Stands 17th At The Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Junior Luke Combs (Newport News) posted a second-round score of two-under par 70 on Saturday for a 36-hole score of 70-70—140 to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a round of four-over par 292 and a two-day score of seven-over par 583 (291-292) at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational being played at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia. The Tigers stand 17th among the 30 teams in the annual collegiate golf event, while Combs is tied for 21st individually among the 150 collegiate golfers.

Combs had three birdies and 14 pars during his round at the par 72, 6,730-yard Pine Lakes course, and now has seven birdies and 26 pars through two rounds. He is being followed by sophomore Garnett Hall (Richmond) (70-74—144, T-49th), junior team captain Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (76-73—149, T-89th), sophomore Oliver Tobin (Charlotte, NC) (75-75—150, T-98th) and junior Peyton Lambert (Hartfield) (81-78—159, T-144th). Hall had three birdies and 12 pars during his round, and now has 10 birdies ad 20 pars. Barnes had two birdies and 13 pars, and now has four birdies and 25 pars. Tobin had two birdies and 11 pars, and now has four birdies and 22 pars. Lambert had 11 pars, and now has four birdies and 15 pars.

The large and highly-competitive tournament field features 17 teams that are ranked among the Top 25 nationally in the latest SCOREBOARD powered by clippd NCAA Division III Men's Golf rankings, including nine of the Top 10, as top-ranked Huntingdon (AL) College is leading the event its 28-under par 271-277—548. Turner Chiles of sixth-ranked Sewanee (TN) is the individual leader at 12-under par 64-68—132. The Tigers are ahead of three schools ranked among the Top 25, while 14 shots from the Top 10.

H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the three-day, 54-hole tournament on Sunday, March 22, in Georgia.
